Feast of St Catherine of ÃØÉ«´«Ã½

St Catherine’s Day is a unique day of prayer, community building and outreach to our Dominican family in the Solomon Islands. On Friday, 28 April we started our day with a special Eucharist celebrated in St Dominic’s Church with Fr Mark O’Brien OP presiding. The Mass was beautifully enhanced by our choir and musicians, who took this opportunity to introduce our community to two new hymns. At lunchtime, we took part in House based fundraising activities organised by the Student Representative Council and assisted by the Education Support Staff, in support of the projects currently underway in the Solomon Islands.

Horizons Week

In the final week of Term 1, all year levels participated in Horizons Week – our Year 12s took part in an annual retreat. In an urban landscape, students explored elements of our tradition through the lens of the 2023 College Theme: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it. Experiences of the sacred included visits to St Patrick’s Cathedral and St Francis’ Church in the city of Melbourne; sessions were also held at the National Gallery of Victoria, Melbourne Museum’s First Peoples Exhibition and the Immigration Museum. ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ also collaborated within their Houses to produce large works of art representing connection and our Dominican community.

Marking Holy Week

Towards the end of last term, we marked Holy Week with a House centred experience of Stations of the Cross; this is a powerful visual and emotional retelling of Jesus’ final journey, with each Station highlighting a particular dimension of this story through narrative, prayer and symbol.

We focused particularly on Stations involving women:

• Veronica wipes the face of Jesus
• Jesus meets the women of Jerusalem
• Women stand beneath the Cross

We concluded the experience by highlighting the women spreading the good news of Christ’s resurrection.

Senior ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ students gave voice to many parts, including:

"We stand together to support all those whose lives are compromised and join Jesus’ journey through Jerusalem, and finally to Resurrection. May we find courage, hope and solidarity; may each one of us here bring to others the Christ we meet today."

In Term 2, we will be focusing on assessing our students' knowledge and skills. Our Year 12s will be taking the General Achievement Test (GAT) and our Year 9 to 11 students will also be undergoing various examinations.

ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ undertaking a Unit 3/4 subject will be taking the GAT on Thursday, 15 June. The GAT serves as an indicator of how our students are placed for the final examinations, as well as areas to improve and focus on. Most importantly, the GAT can contribute towards the final score in the event a student is unable (unavoidably) to complete a final exam. As such, we encourage students to approach the GAT seriously and do their best.

Trial Examinations will be held during the September break to further prepare students for their final VCAA examinations.

As the examination period gets closer for Years 9 to 11, we will be holding specialised classes that focus on examination writing skills, revision strategies and learning tips to help students optimise the assessment outcome. It is so important that our students study consistently as this avoids the loss of momentum and reduces feelings of stress and anxiety. We ask for your support to encourage your daughter/s to complete homework tasks on time and prepare well in advance for examinations.

Regular assessment and feedback on our students’ subject learning are available on ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ Central. Please access this feedback regularly and do not hesitate to contact the College if you have any concerns.

Examinations commence on Monday, 19 June and finish on Friday, 23 June.

During Wellness on Tuesday, 16 May, our students will learn about what IDAHOBIT Day stands for and what it promotes. IDAHOBIT is a day to celebrate and appreciate our diverse community, and to stand up for equality for all members of society and within our ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ community. The day is about raising awareness, and championing inclusion in our schools and workplaces. It is an international day for LGBTQI+ human rights and positive social change.

The Dominican Education Australia commitment to child safety states that: ​

"DEA is committed to embedding a child safe culture in all Ministries where children and young people are respected, their voices are heard, and they are safe and feel safe. Particular attention is given to the needs of vulnerable children and young people, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and young people, children and young people with a disability, children and young people from culturally and/or linguistically diverse backgrounds, those who might experience mental health issues or who are unable to live at home, and those who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender or intersex."

Child Safety Update

Child Safety remains a priority at ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ College. The Child Safety tile has been relocated to a more obvious position on all dashboards to enable members of our community to read, engage with and provide feedback on current policies and guidelines. It also contains current information about Cyber Safety. We hope that this information also highlights our commitment to promoting the safety, wellbeing and inclusion of all students.

Mental Health and Young People

Parents and carers can play a crucial role in their children's mental health. As a result, staying informed on the current state of youth mental health is vital, as it not only affects individuals, but also families and communities. According to recent research, the frequency of mental health disorders among young people is increasing, with anxiety, depression, and self-harm being among the most common challenges.

One of the reasons being attributed to this rise is the heightened stress and anxiety that many young people face in today's society. Academic success, social media, and family issues are all influencing factors. Many young people are still suffering the long-term consequences of the pandemic, such as social isolation, uncertainty and loss.

Parents can play an important role in their children's mental health. Creating a safe and open environment for your children to talk about their emotions, thoughts, and feelings is vital. Encouraging healthy habits like regular exercise, a balanced diet, and proper sleep can help reduce their stress levels and boost your child's overall mental health. There are also many resources and services available to children, adolescents, and their families, such as our school counsellors, various mental health organisations, support lines, and of course, mental health professionals. It is important to remember that seeking help is a show of strength not weakness, and that early intervention is critical in addressing young people's mental health difficulties.

Don't forget to book tickets for ÃØÉ«´«Ã½'s Night of Jazz on Thursday, 11 May - we recommend booking quickly to avoid missing out. The event celebrates the achievements of our jazz ensembles and many senior musicians, and features an exciting program of special collaborations, group and solo items.

In 2023, we are thrilled to welcome Jude Perl along with an amazing house band. Jude Perl is a multi-award winning singer, songwriter and comedian based in Melbourne. Originally from Texas, Jude has created a name for herself in Melbourne by writing and performing hilarious, well-crafted songs, and as a fine jazz singer and pianist. She was a finalist at the 2012 National Jazz Awards, regularly appears at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, and has won four Green Room Awards for her solo and cabaret work. In short, we're in for a treat! ÃØÉ«´«Ã½'s Night of Jazz will be a fantastic evening of jazz and entertainment, a great chance to catch up with friends within the College community, and most importantly, to support the amazing efforts of our young musicians.

Tickets include reserved table seating and a light supper. Families and groups are encouraged to book together. Tickets are not required for student performers. As this is a licensed venue all students are required to have a parent or guardian there to supervise their daughter/s.

Extended Rehearsals

ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ involved in our Night of Jazz are reminded that there are two jazz ensemble workshops on Thursday, 4 May, and Tuesday, 9 May, in preparation for the event. The workshops are important preparation for the Night of Jazz and we encourage all students to attend.

St Catherine’s Day Eucharist

Our choirs and instrumental students perform regularly at the College Eucharists, including the recent St Catherine's Day Eucharist. ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ College and St Kevin’s College present the 2023 musical, Chicago: High School Edition. The cast, orchestra and crew consisting of students from both Colleges have been working tirelessly throughout the semester to learn lines, songs and dances to create a wonderful show. They have attended rehearsals after school, on Sundays and even during their school holidays to develop a refined and entertaining performance.

"At last the 2023 musical has finally arrived. Although The Addams Family was a wonderful experience with my cast mates, ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ has not been able to present a musical to the public since 2019! That was when I was a Year 8 student starring in my first school musical, All Shook Up.

Over the past few years, there have been many missed opportunities for students, and we are glad and excited to be able to present Chicago to the public and it is definitely a ‘not to be missed’ show. The many hours of rehearsals and collaboration between the two schools have consequently allowed the cast, band and crew to bond and create an incredible show. School musicals form memories and experiences that will never be forgotten and the amount of musical talent at this school will only grow as the years go by. Please come to see Chicago and show your support for all of our hard work. We guarantee you will enjoy this show as the fun we have had in producing it is highly evident in the students' performance."

The Victorian Science Talent Search is a competition that challenges high school students to conduct independent research in STEM fields and present findings to a panel of judges. This prestigious competition is sponsored by the Science Teachers' Association of Victoria and offers a chance to win substantial bursaries.

Participating in the Victorian Science Talent Search offers many benefits. It allows students to explore interests in science, develop research skills, gain experience in presenting and communicating findings to others. It also gives students the opportunity to meet other like minded students, and be recognised for diligence and dedication. Competition categories include: experimental research, creative writing, inventions, working models, posters, games, computer programs, photography and video productions.

Participating in the Victorian Science Talent Search is an excellent way to showcase scientific talents while gaining valuable experience and skills which would be beneficial for one's academic and professional career. Science enthusiasts who are looking for an exciting challenge can consider participating in the Victorian Science Talent Search.

Year 12 student reflection by Sophia V

"Books are a uniquely portable magic" – Stephen King. This quote rings true to the heart of why readers read and is a testament of what writers can craft and are capable of. Thanks to the Learning Centre staff, the ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ College Readers and Writers Club had the honour of attending the Melbourne Writers Festival.

The Club, consisting of students across year levels, had the opportunity to listen to four expert creatives: Tom Taylor, Nova Weertman, Lili Wilkinson and Kay Kerr. Across four sessions with the creatives, students learnt how to build authentic characters and worlds, pursue creative passions, and posed questions to their favourite authors. The excursion has enabled students to hone in on their writing skills and engage in their craft!

It is vital that parents encourage students to pursue reading and writing inside and outside school, not only does it make your child smarter, it also improves communication and concentration, allowing them to expand their world views!

Horizons Week in the final week of Term 1 was a huge success with Year 8 and 11 students experiencing some great career related activities. Qualified Career Counsellor and Coach, Tyson Day spoke to our Year 11s on career development, career transition and life design. They also visited three tertiary institutions and had the opportunity to hear about courses, pathways, overseas study options and what life is like as a university student.

In Term 2, we have the annual Careers Showcase and a new initiative, the ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ College Tertiary Careers Expo, both of which will take place on Thursday, 1 June 2023. Please save the date!

We now invite applications for Year 7 2025, and have limited places available in 2024 across all year levels. For our Year 7 intake, offers are made in towards the start of Term 4 in a student's Grade 5 year. Applications can be made at any time via our College website.

All enrolments are subject to a successful enrolment interview, during which we hope to learn more about your daughter, including her interests, hobbies and learning strengths. This interview also provides an opportunity for you and your family to learn more about ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ College, including our school values, subject and cocurricular offerings, and expectations of our students.

Applications for the Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) are now open. If you hold a valid Health Care Card (HCC), Pensioner Concession Card (PCC), or you are a temporary foster parent or a first time applicant, you may be eligible for a $1,000 fee discount.

If you believe you are eligible, please fill out and return the CSEF Application Form before 23 June 2023.

If you applied for the CSEF in 2022 at ÃØÉ«´«Ã½ College, you do not need to complete an application form in 2023 unless there has been a change in your family circumstances.
